Esprit is the only new Lotus in development
A Lotus insider has apparently revealed that the sports car maker’s development budget will only stretch to cover the cost of engineering the new Esprit, which is due on sale in 2013.
The revelation puts Lotus boss Dany Bahar’s ambitious plan for five new models by 2015 in seeming jeopardy.
Five full-size concept cars were revealed to the press at the Paris motor show last month to a mixed reception and a promise from Bahar that the bold strategy would put Lotus in contention with established premium manufacturers like Porsche.
The 5.0-litre V8 hybrid Esprit is still more than two years away and the rest of the Lotus range is starting to get long in the tooth, which could raise questions over the British company's long-term viability if it is unable to come up with the required development funds.
