Tata Motors Offers Safety Upgrades to Prevent Nano Fires

By RICHARD S. CHANG

A new Tata Nano, still decorated with a celebratory garland of marigolds, burst into flames about 45 minutes after the owner picked up the car from the dealer in Mumbai, India.

In response to a handful of cases of its Nano subcompact car catching fire, Tata Motors has issued safety upgrades to the exhaust and electrical systems, reports the Agence France-Presse.

Shortly after Tata began selling the Nano this year, a few had fires, including one that had just left the dealership. So far, about six Nanos have caught fire.

After Tata investigated the cause of the fires, it concluded that “there are no generic defects” on the Nano, which costs $2,200.

“The Tata Nano is a safe car with a robust design, state of the art components and built with an uncompromising attention to quality,” Tata Motors said.

Tata has said that it plans to sell the car in Europe and the United States, though there hasn’t been confirmation on-sale dates. The United States version — should it ever materialize — would no doubt come with a bigger engine (the India-spec Nano has a 620-cc engine) and a bigger body to satisfy safety requirements and public taste.
