Sir Jackie Stewart has described Sebastian Vettel as a "totally justified World Champion" following his Formula One triumph on Sunday.

Stewart was happy to perform a considerable U-turn because 48 hours earlier the Scot had suggested Vettel would struggle to bear the responsibility that comes with being Champion.

Stewart had said: "For me, to carry the dignity of the sport, to carry Formula One on a global basis, to carry motor sport as a whole around the world as Champion, Sebastian has some way to go to be able to do that."

But after watching a masterful performance and drive around the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, Stewart was more than happy to revise his opinion of the 23-year-old.

Touching the end of his tartan cap, Stewart added: "I take my hat off to him. I think he has done a great job.

"He cannot be faulted. He was fastest in the race, controlled the pace and won by a 10-second margin.

"I think both Fernando (Alonso) and Mark (Webber) failed to deliver for whatever reason, whether it was strategy, whether it was pace, I don't know.

"But I think Sebastian is now the correct World Champion. It cannot be disputed he is a totally justified World Champion."

Asked what advice he could give Vettel, the youngest title-holder in the sport's history, Stewart said: "He has to see the responsibility he carries as World Champion.

"He should present himself as well as he can for an industry, not just a sport, and he should enjoy it, and to do it with style.

"He should think back to the other World Champions and how they carried it off, and if he does that it will only raise his stock.

"But I can now see him doing it well because he has personality, character, and he's a very, very good man.

"He's certainly more mature than his 23 years, and this will mature him even faster, take him to another dimension."
