Chet Khot-Pong Kon Sao Nature Study Centre
Kaeng Khoi, Sara Buri
Just 120 kilometres or so north of Bangkok, this place encompasses wooded areas on the western edge of Khao Yai, its proximity to the capital making it very convenient for city slickers seeking to get back in touch with nature.
The scene depicted in the painting is a portion of the lakeside camping ground for visitors. From here one can walk into the forest to reach several waterfalls. There are also a number of well-designed mountain-biking trails in the vicinity.
- How to get there
The easiest way to reach Chet Khot is via the Mitraphap Highway. Just before Thap Kwang there's a pedestrian bridge. At the base of the bridge, on the other side of the highway, you'll see a side road and a sign indicating the way to the nature study centre. There's no public-transport service in these parts _ sorry!
- Food and accommodation
In addition to the aforementioned campsite, there are some bungalows available but you need to phone and make a reservation well in advance. There are a few small restaurants on the foothills. Instant coffee and microwave-ready food can be purchased at the centre's office. Campers who wish to cook can make use of a communal kitchen which is equipped with stoves, tap water and electricity.
