Di Montezemolo: Italy only needs one race
Luca di Montezemolo has backed Bernie Ecclestone's decision not to host a grand prix in Rome, saying the sport needs new countries.
Last week, Ecclestone wrote to Rome's mayor Gianni Alemanno, ruling out the Italian capital's chances of hosting a race in the future.
The F1 supremo stated in his letter that he didn't want any country to play host to more than one race and Italy already has a grand prix at Monza.
Ferrari President di Montezemolo has now come out in support of Ecclestone's decision.
"I said it at the Christmas dinner with the Italian media: the teams' view is not to exceed a certain number of races per year: already the season goes on forever," he said.
"The preference is to have grands prix in new countries in important markets, first off in the United States, rather than have two races in Germany, Spain, or eventually Italy.
"Therefore, Ecclestone's letter is not a failure for Rome, but the awareness that there is a desire to have just one grand prix in Italy."
But, having said that, the Italian did raise the question about alternating between Monza and Rome.
"Alternating it with Monza? We would need to see if that suits Ecclestone, if the conditions are right, if the two cities can agree, while not forgetting that Monza is a permanent circuit that is part of the history of Formula 1."
