THE TEAM REACTS TO BAHRAIN CANCELLATION
Red Bull Racing has given its reaction to the announcement this afternoon that the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix has been cancelled.
Due to the unrest in the kingdom, the race has been ‘withdrawn’ according to a statement from Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in order that the country can focus on “its process of national dialogue.”
Speaking this afternoon, Christian Horner said: “It’s a shame, but the country has got bigger issues than a Formula One race at the moment. It is important that they address those. At the end of the day we’re a sport and we can always go back there, if not this year then in future years.
“It’s a great shame not to be going, it’s always been an enjoyable place to visit, they’ve always made us feel very welcome, but understandably with the issues the country faces the responsible decision has been made and the first race will be in Australia. So, disappointed not to be going but ultimately I believe it’s the right decision to be made considering what has been happening.”
Learning of the news while at the Barcelona test, Mark Webber said: “The right decision was made, in light of what is going on, so we look forward to Melbourne instead. It would have been nice to go to Bahrain, but hopefully it can stage the race again. As for starting in Melbourne, it’s my home race and, as always, I’m looking forward to it. It is a sensational event, we’re in good shape as a team, so I hope to go there and get a very good result.”
Bernie Ecclestone added that Formula One looked forward to returning soon: "It is sad that Bahrain has had to withdraw from the race, we wish the whole nation well as they begin to heal their country."
The test scheduled for four days in Bahrain prior to the grand prix will now take place in Barcelona on Tuesday-Friday, March 8-11
