Screening for soviet classic
Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 film Battleship Potemkin has long been celebrated as one of the greatest cinematic creations, and an indisputable proof of cinema's power to engage in political and social expression. The screening at Thai Film Archive in Salaya, accompanied by live original music by Nipatara band, will show once again how Battleship Potemkin remains a landmark in the history of motion pictures.
On their way back to Russia from a war with Japan, the crew of battleship Potemkin grow mutinous after poor rations of food, while on the mainland, citizens begin a mass uprising against the Czar. Battleship Potemkin boasts one of cinema's most famous scenes, in which soldiers massacre people on Odessa steps, a majestic choreography of terror that remains so powerful today.
The screening today will showcase original music by a Thai band that consists of a synthesizer, percussion and a traditional sor ou - Siamese world music to go with world cinema.
