The Bangkok Fashion Society has booked a cruise and wants all Thais to come along
The Bangkok Fashion Society (BFS), made up of 11 Thai clothing brands, is taking some time off for a soft adventure
holiday with its collections for the coming spring and summer.
There are touches of pretty lace and a mix of icon '70s styling along the lines of Jackie O.
New president Mallika Ruengkrittiya of Kloset leads the BFS in unveiling the "Think Global Dress Local" concept.
Thailand now has many institutes offering fashion courses, Mallika says, and "the industry really has plenty of room to
grow". But the challenge, she adds, is getting Thais to dress in locally made rather than imported clothes.
If that's the goal, the BFS is off to a solid start with a collection that, ironically, is about travelling.
"Holidays" is the theme to the first look, with Sretsis taking inspiration from India, Kloset enjoying a cruise through the
imagination and Asava taking luxurious elegance outdoors. Greyhound offers a "Perfect Cropping" of the world's
landscapes.
Picture the young trekkers of the 1990s seeking out fresh experiences. Their clothes are loose but functional - plenty of
pockets, please.
Senada, Playhound, Greyhound and Disaya envision folks lounging on the deck of a cruise liner, some in sailor stripes,
many in white and navy.
Off on fantasy adventures are those in colourful prints, like Kloset's "Letter from Mrs Columbus", Sretsis' Little Mermaid
"Weekend Wanderers" and Issue's "Flower Poem".
A second major trend is "Neo Romance", with ample lace and silk chiffon in utterly appealing corsets and other lingerie.
Disaya's lovingly inspirational "Fiance's Handkerchief" exudes romance with lace embroidery and trimming on
lightweight tops and bottoms and a lace-overlay shift dress.
Sretsis adds a seashell motif using appliqu้ and laser cutting to create a pretty scrollwork effect, and Munchu's "In Bloom"
includes a sweet-but-sassy lace miniskirt and jumpsuit.
Senada utilises a more vintage lace, and Theatre shows how feminine it can be in a dramatic maxi.
The "Looking Back" theme draws inspiration from style icons like Jackie Onassis, Coco Chanel and Pablo Picasso and
the hippies of the '60s.
Asava's elegant burgundy evening gown is the queen of the look, but the other BFS designers have plenty of fun too with
colourful graphics like 1970s revival motifs and lively prints of flowers and animals.
All the shapes and silhouettes are there in the collection - miniskirts, shorts, cropped tops, double breasted jackets and
trenchcoats. What's really hot, though, is the new proportions, as in ankle-length trousers.
Greyhound plays with the length of shirtsleeves and Playhound, Senada, Sretsis and Disaya toy with hemlines. Super-
loose pants are also in, as demonstrated by Senada and Greyhound.
There are interesting trims, too, such as Disaya's scallops and hankies, Greyhound and Kloset's prints and Asava and
Senada's piping.
The colours run the gamut from sweet candy and other bright tones to retro pastel and the classics. Expect to see a lot of
colour blocks.
The accessories are similarly varied in a sea of jewellery. Animals and insects make their trendy appearances on rings,
bracelets, bangles, necklaces and earrings.
