Is Perez The New Button?

Even though he was (one might say unfairly) disqualified from the Australian Grand Prix, Mexican rookie Sergio Perez was a huge standout of the race, albeit overshaddowed by Vettel's dominance and Petrov's podium.

What hasn't been emphasized enough was Sergio's ability to conserve the C30's tyres. Last year at Valencia, team mate Kobayashi put in a similar effort whereby he used the same tyres until the late stages of the race. But that was on the more durable Bridgestone tyres.

Sergio's performance was even more impressive due to the extremely short lifespan of 2011's Pirelli tyres. He managed to make only one pitstop, compared to everybody elses 2/3 (at minimum) and finish well in the points in 7th, beating his own experienced team mate on his debut.

Perhaps Sergio's driving style is similar to the smooth and sweeping style of Jenson Button, who is renowned for his ability to naturally conserve the rubber. True or not, Perez's performance was brilliant, considering his worn tyres, lack of F1 experience and the C30's mid field performance. It's a pity that he and Kamui were both disqualifed. Peter Sauber has really invested in two of the most skilled GP2 drivers.
