FDA - Bianchi, third in Race 1 at Imola, heading to the final showdown

Maranello, 19 March - Third step of the podium for Jules Bianchi in the GP2 Asia Series at the renovated Imola circuit, in the final and decisive round of the Asian series, which precedes the main GP2 series, that gets underway in Istanbul over the weekend of 8 May.

The Ferrari Driver Academy youngster started from the second row and managed to make up two places moving up the order by passing the Arden of Josef Kral on lap 6 and with a rapid pit stop on lap 19, which allowed him to get the jump on Michael Herck, driving for Scuderia Coloni.

The Frenchman, driving for Lotus Art ran at a consistent race pace to cross the line third behind Giedo Van der Garde (Barwa Addax) and winner Romain Grosjean (DAMS,) who heads the classification five points ahead of the Ferrari student.

There are seven points still up for grabs so tomorrow’s race is the final chance to turn things around for Bianchi: “I will do all I can to attack and make up points on Grosjean,” said Jules after the first race. “Today, I got a good start and overall, I am pleased, also because the team called me in for the pit stop at the right moment, which meant I got ahead of Herck. In the final stages I tried to close on Van der Garde, but the tyres were so work that I was struggling to control the car coming out of the corners.”

Maranello, 19 marzo – Terzo gradino del podio in Gara 1 per Jules Bianchi impegnato con la GP2 Asia Series sul rinnovato circuito di Imola, per l’ultimo e conclusivo round della serie asiatica che precede la GP2 Main Series, al via a Istanbul nel fine settimana dell’8 maggio.

Il giovane talento della Ferrari Driver Academy, scattato dalla seconda fila, ha iniziato una progressiva rimonta che l’ha portato a recuperare due posizioni, grazie ad un sorpasso sulla Arden di Josef Kral al giro sei e ad un efficace pit stop che, al giro diciannove, gli ha permesso di avere la meglio su Michael Herck della Scuderia Coloni.

II pilota francese schierato della Lotus Art ha mantenuto un ritmo costante di gara ed ha tagliato terzo il traguardo alle spalle di Giedo Van der Garde (Barwa Addax) e del vincitore Romain Grosjean (DAMS), che nella lotta al titolo sale al comando della classifica provvisoria con un vantaggio di cinque lunghezze sul ferrarista.

Con sette punti ancora in palio, la gara di domani rappresenta l’opportunità decisiva per capovolgere la situazione: “Farò il possibile per attaccare e recuperare punti su Grosjean” – ha dichiarato Jules al suo rientro ai box- “Oggi ho fatto una buona partenza, e complessivamente sono soddisfatto anche perchè la squadra ha scelto il momento giusto per il mio pit stop, permettendomi di scavalcare Herck. Nella fase finale ho tentato di raggiungere Van der Garde, ma le gomme erano talmente consumate che facevo fatica a controllare la vettura in uscita dalle curve”.
