A Cardiff-based pair of designers will learn later if their interactive T-shirt for people playing air guitar has won a technology award.

The shirt developed by Warren Fauvel and Luke Khan has been shortlisted for a prize at the annual SXSW music and technology festival in Austin, Texas.

The wearer scores points as their hand passes over a barcode on the shirt.

Mr Khan said his colleague was nervous but "quietly confident" ahead of his presentation to the judging panel.

"It's exciting. I'm sure he'll be fine as he's used to presenting but maybe not on this scale," said Mr Khan, speaking at the offices in Butetown of the pair's firm, FauvelKhan.

Mr Fauvel was due to make his presentation to the judging panel in Austin at 1200 local time (1700 GMT) with the final result expected around 2000 local time (0100 GMT Thursday).

He was attending the event with members The Last Republic, the south Wales rock band for whom the T-shirt was developed.

"I think we've got a great opportunity to go all the way as the AiR guitar is a little different to everything else on show," said Mr Fauvel.

"No major contacts or contracts as of yet but today is the big day to build interest so I'll be filling the diary for the week over the course of the competition."

The festival is taking place for the third year as the interactive arm of the annual SXSW (South by Southwest) music festival which has been growing in reputation as a showcase for cutting edge artists.

Mr Fauvel and Mr Khan began their partnership in 2007 after they graduated from Swansea Metropolitan University.

Their firm, FauvelKhan, has applied for a worldwide patent on the T-shirt, which it hopes to sell to other bands as merchandising.
