FLOODING UPDATE

As of March 31, 2011 / 14.00 hrs

Eight provinces in mid-southern Thailand, including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Chumphon, Phatthalung, Trang, Phang Nga, Songkhla, and Krabi, have been affected by floods due to heavy rains. The flooding is mainly affecting low-lying land and areas near major waterways. These provinces are approximately 400-600 kilometres south of Bangkok and 950-1,200 kilometres south of Chiang Mai. Other tourist destinations within Thailand outside of these provinces have not been affected.

Due to the floods and current weather conditions, Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport is still temporarily closed until weather clears. Samui Airport has resumed operations as normal. Most airports in southern Thailand; such as, Phuket and Hat Yai remain operating as per normal. Ferry services between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and Surat Thani have resumed operations. Ships and helicopters from the Royal Thai Navy have been dispatched to help transport visitors stranded on the islands who cannot return to the mainland due to rough seas.

All train services south of Chumphon have been temporarily suspended due to the flooding. Train services elsewhere in Thailand are operating as per normal. The flooding in the southern provinces is expected to subside within the next several days as weather conditions improve.

Elsewhere in Thailand, the situation for residents and visitors remains normal. All transportation links are operating as per usual, as is Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Tourists planning to travel to the mid-southern provinces affected by the flooding are advised to check the latest weather forecasts for their destination and confirm arrangements with the transportation providers with which they will be travelling.
