Airport traffic growth suggests return to normal

Thailand's six main airports recorded a 7.32% rise in passenger throughput in the six months to March to top 34.14 million as traffic recovered to its traditional growth pattern.

Flight movements through airports including Suvarnabhumi rose 10.58% in the period to 220,064, while cargo volume rose 8.28% to 728,086 tonnes, according to figures compiled by Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) for the first half of its fiscal year.

International passenger traffic rose 10.21% year-on-year to 21.66 million, outgrowing domestic numbers that inched up 2.64% to 12.47 million.

Frequencies of international flights jumped 12.39% to 123,814, while domestic services grew 8.34% to 96,250. International freight movements rose 8.24% to 666,921 tonnes, with domestic volumes edged up 8.71% to 61,615 tonnes.

The bulk of all air traffic went through Suvarnabhumi. Its passenger throughout was at 24.64 million (up 4.37% year-on-year), representing 72% of the total at AoT-operated airports.

Suvarnabhumi handled 145,128 aircraft movements (up 7.7%), or 65.94% of the total. Cargo shipments through Suvarnabhumi were 687,163 tonnes (up 8.24%), representing 94.37% of the total.

In the period, Suvarnabhumi handled 19.08 million international passengers (up 7.7%) and 5.55 million domestic travellers (down 5.67%).

International flights through the airport rose 9.97% to 105,420 with domestic frequencies increased 2.17% to 39,708.

International freight through Suvarnabhumi rose 8.22% to 659,233 tonnes and domestic freight was up 8.8% to 27,930 tonnes.

Aside from Suvarnabhumi, AoT operates Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai.
