Chinese GP - No miracle cure for Ferrari
McLaren breaks Red Bull monopoly
Shanghai, 17 April – Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso finished sixth and seventh respectively in the Chinese Grand Prix. While motor sport is never really predictable, to some extent this less than satisfactory result for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro could have been suggested prior to the start. The places ahead of our Brazilian driver were filled by the two Red Bulls, the two McLarens and, one Mercedes, a team that had shown signs of a big step forward right from free practice earlier in the weekend.
Definitely less predictable was the actual finishing order, because for the first time this year, victory did not go to Sebastian Vettel, but to Lewis Hamilton instead. The championship leader took second place ahead of team-mate Mark Webber, the author of an electrifying drive, making up fifteen places after starting from eighteenth on the grid. With an extended three week break before the next race in Turkey, when the Scuderia hopes to introduce some significant modifications to the 150ºItalia, perhaps the Prancing Horse can take some encouragement that today’s result at least proves that Red Bull Racing is not unbeatable.
Tyres again played a vital role with the winner pitting three times, although Fernando did not feel the fact he was on a two stop would have made much difference to his final placing. Felipe on the other hand did concede that an additional tyre change might have allowed him to fight off a few more of those who got past him in the final stages, while adding he felt this was his best race drive for quite some time.
The two McLarens passed Vettel at the start and these three pulled away from Rosberg and the Ferraris led by Felipe who got past his team-mate shortly after the start. The Brazilian was particularly competitive, running as high as second with the run of pit stops, while Fernando seemed to spend the entire race fighting Schumacher: the early battle was the one that did the damage as it came after the Spaniard’s first pit stop and stuck behind the Mercedes, he lost touch with the leaders. Then towards the end of the race, it was Schumacher, now behind the Ferrari, who was trying to pass, but without success. Running the hard tyre for their final stint, both Felipe and Fernando were experiencing some significant degradation which meant the Brazilian had to see other cars come flying past him, while the Spaniard hung on with plenty of determination to that seventh spot.
Rosberg proved just how competitive was the Mercedes this weekend as a lap 12 pit stop put him out in clean air and while the leading trio seemed to be tripping over one another, it allowed him to lead for a large chunk of the 56 laps. Hamilton had other ideas though, passing Button on lap 35 before getting the edge on Rosberg, who would finish fifth and with 12 laps to go, he got by Felipe on the straight. The McLaren man finally demoted Vettel from his accustomed lead with just four laps remaining, while further back, Webber was on a charge, which would end with a fine third place. It was a thrilling battle for a larger than usual crowd here in Shanghai. Behind the two Ferraris, the final points went to eighth placed Schumacher, followed by Petrov and Kobayashi.
So that’s the first three races, the first trio of “flyaways” done and dusted. Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro is third in the championship, but big improvements are needed and that is exactly what the team is working on for the next round in Istanbul, Turkey at the beginning of May.

Shanghai, 17 aprile – Felipe Massa e Fernando Alonso hanno concluso il Gran Premio della Cina rispettivamente in sesta e settima posizione. Sebbene nello sport dei motori sia sempre difficile fare delle previsioni, questo risultato non certo soddisfacente per la Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro poteva comunque essere considerato plausibile prima del via. Le posizioni davanti al nostro pilota brasiliano hanno visto la presenza di due Red Bull, due McLaren e una Mercedes, squadra che ha fatto un grosso passo in avanti dalle prime prove libere di questo fine settimana di gara.
Decisamente meno prevedibile è stato l’ordine di arrivo finale: per la prima volta in questa stagione, infatti, la vittoria non è stata appannaggio di Sebastian Vettel, ma di Lewis Hamilton. Il leader in Campionato ha conquistato il secondo posto davanti al compagno di squadra Mark Webber, autore di un’entusiasmante prestazione, capace di recuperare 15 posizioni in gara dalla diciottesima piazza sulla griglia di partenza. Con tre settimane di pausa prima della prossima gara in Turchia, dove la Scuderia spera di introdurre modifiche significative alla Ferrari 150° Italia, il Cavallino Rampante può prendere coraggio dal fatto che il risultato di quest’oggi ha mostrato come la Red Bull Racing non sia imbattibile.
Gli pneumatici hanno giocato anche quest’oggi un ruolo fondamentale, con il vincitore che si è fermato tre volte ai box per cambiare gomme. Fernando Alonso, però, nel dopo gara era convinto che una strategia di due soste non avrebbe, nel suo caso, fatto molto differenza sul risultato finale. Felipe, invece, ha ammesso che un ulteriore cambio di gomme gli avrebbe permesso di combattere contro quelli avversari che hanno avuto la meglio nei suoi confronti nelle battute finali di gara, aggiungendo di avere la sensazione di aver disputato la sua migliore gara da parecchio tempo a questa parte.
Le due McLaren superavano Vettel allo start; i tre distanziavano Rosberg e le Ferrari, con Felipe davanti al compagno di squadra, scavalcato alla partenza. Il pilota brasiliano era particolarmente competitivo, tanto da arrivare anche la seconda posizione durante il balletto dei pit stop. Fernando, invece, trascorrerà gran parte della propria gara in lotta con Schumacher: il primo duello, dopo il primo pit stop dello spagnolo, era quello che procurava il maggior danno per Alonso che, bloccato alle spalle della Mercedes, perdeva contatto dai leader. Nelle battute finali, invece, toccava a Schumacher essere alle spalle della Ferrari, cercando il sorpasso ma senza successo. Sia Felipe che Fernando accusavano un degrado significativo delle proprie gomme di mescola dura montate per lo stint finale: il pilota brasiliano subiva così il sorpasso di avversari molto più veloci, mentre Fernando si teneva stretto con la massima determinazione il settimo posto finale.
Il pit stop effettuato alla 12esima tornata che lo riportava in gara con pista libera, e le contemporanee “scaramucce” tra i tre piloti di testa, consentivano a Rosberg di comandare il Gran Premio per una gran parte dei 56 giri complessivi, a dimostrazione di della competitività della Mercedes in questo weekend. Hamilton era di altra opinione, comunque: il pilota McLaren superava Button al giro 35 prima di avere la meglio su Rosberg, il quale a sua volta chiuderà la gara al quinto posto dopo il sorpasso su Felipe sul lungo rettilineo a 12 giri dalla fine. Hamilton finalmente spodestava Vettel dall’ormai abituale prima posizione a quattro tornate dal termine, mentre più indietro un velocissimo Webber recuperava fino alla terza posizione finale. Una gara emozionante per un pubblico più numeroso del solito qui a Shanghai. Alle spalle delle due Ferrari, le altre posizioni a punti erano appannaggio di Schumacher, ottavo, seguito da Petrov e Kobayashi.
Le prime tre trasferte extracontinentali sono quindi state archiviate. La Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro è terza in Campionato, ma grossi miglioramenti sono necessari. Esattamente ciò su cui sta lavorando l’intera squadra in vista del prossimo appuntamento di Istanbul, Turchia, agli inizi di maggio.
