Malaysian GP - Massa: “Confident we can have a better weekend”
Sepang, 7 April – One hour before the traditional rain storm hit the Sepang circuit, Felipe Massa was one of the drivers called to the official FIA press conference at the track. Given that he was sharing the panel with, amongst others, Jenson Button, inevitably, his thrilling fight with the Englishman in the opening laps of the Australian Grand Prix, was the first thing the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver was asked about. “Thanks to the KERS I was able to fight very hard to keep Jenson behind me,” recalled the Brazilian. “I made good use of KERS on the straight where he was very quick, using the adjustable wing and I also used it through the corners, managing the system well. Then he passed me on the wrong side and, to be honest, I expected him to give me the place back, but after Alonso passed me it would have been more difficult for him to do that.”
Massa has an unusual record here, as he has often gone well in qualifying, twice starting from pole, but often his best races have come when he has had a poor grid position. “Last year for example, I was almost last on the grid, after going out in Q1,” he said. “And then I had a very good race to finish seventh, so I hope that this year we can get it right for both qualifying and the race!” The Ferrari man had recently expressed his concern that overtaking at this track would be too easy if the FIA opted to allow the DRS to be used on both straights. “But the decision has been taken to use just the main straight, so I think that will be fair,” he said. Regarding the weekend, Massa believes the Ferrari 150º Italia will perform better than in Melbourne. “We spent the last two weeks analysing our Australian data and we know the direction to start here and I hope it produces a more competitive car. In Australia in qualifying, there was a big difference to Red Bull and also I was too aggressive in my set-up, so we will change that for this race. We can expect better speed and I am confident we can have a better weekend.”
Red Bull stated they had not used KERS in the opening round, but they planned to have it here in Malaysia, so Felipe was asked if this would make them uncatchable. “It’s a bit early to kill the championship!” he stated. “It’s difficult to comment about other teams, but I know that on our car, without the KERS, we lose lap time.”

Sepang, 7 aprile - Un'ora prima che il tradizionale temporale colpisse il circuito di Sepang, Felipe Massa è stato uno dei piloti chiamati alla conferenza stampa ufficiale della FIA in pista. Visto che era in gruppo, tra gli altri, con Jenson Button, inevitabilmente la prima cosa chiesta al pilota della Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro è stata la sua eccitante battaglia con l'inglese nei primi giri del Gran Premio australiano. "Grazie al KERS ho potuto combattere duramente e tenere Jenson dietro di me" ha ricordato il brasiliano. "Ho fatto un buon uso del KERS sul rettilineo dove lui era molto veloce, usando l'alettone regolabile e l'ho utilizzato anche nelle curve, gestendo bene il sistema. Poi mi ha superato sul lato sbagliato e, ad essere onesti, io mi aspettavo di riavere di nuovo la mia posizione, ma dopo che Alonso mi ha superato sarebbe stato difficile per lui farlo".
Massa ha un record inusuale qui, visto che è andato spesso bene nelle qualifiche, partendo due volte in pole, ma spesso le sue migliori gare sono arrivate quando lui partiva da una posizione arretrata in griglia. "L'ultimo anno per esempio ero quasi ultimo sulla griglia di partenza, dopo essere andato fuori in Q1" - ha detto - "e poi ho fatto un'ottima gara finendo settimo, così spero che quest'anno possiamo fare bene, sia in qualifica sia in gara!". Il pilota della Ferrari ha recentemente espresso la preoccupazione che superare in questo circuito sarebbe stato fin troppo facile se la FIA avesse optato per concedere il permesso di utilizzo del DRS su entrambi i rettilinei. "Ma la decisione presa è stata quella di usarlo solo sul rettilineo principale, così penso che vada bene" ha detto. Riguardo a questo fine settimana, Massa crede che la Ferrari 150° Italia avrà prestazioni migliori rispetto a Melbourne. "Abbiamo trascorso le ultime due settimane analizzando i dati australiani e adesso sappiamo la direzione da cui partire e spero che questo servirà ad avere una vettura più competitiva. In Australia durante le qualifiche, c'era una grande differenza con la Red Bull e sono stato troppo aggressivo nel mio set-up, così per questa gara si cambia. Ci possiamo aspettare una maggiore velocità e confido che possiamo avere un fine settimana migliore".
La Red Bull ha dichiarato di non aver utilizzato il KERS nella gara di apertura, ma ha progettato di averlo qui in Malesia. A questo proposito è stato chiesto a Felipe se questo avrebbe reso le Red Bull imprendibili. "È un po' presto per uccidere il campionato!" - ha affermato - "è difficile fare commenti sulle altre squadre ma io so che sulla nostra vettura, senza il KERS, perdiamo tempo sul giro".
