Acropolis Hall of Fame honours McRae

World championship legend Colin McRae will be honoured by an exhibition during the Acropolis Rally in June.

The 1995 world champion, who lost his life in a helicopter accident in 2007, has been voted into the Acropolis Rally’s Hall of Fame through an online poll.

McRae, a five-time winner of the demanding gravel event, has been inducted as the rally’s best foreign driver and the rally organisers have announced plans to host a special exhibition to mark his selection.

“If there is a rally with which the great Scotsman has been really connected, that’s the Acropolis Rally,” said a statement from the event organisers. “His five records have made him the ultimate record man [on] the Greek gravel.”

Four other inductees have also been announced: “Stratissino” was chosen as the best Greek driver after finishing fifth in 1986 and winning Group N in 1991. The Lancia Delta HF Integrale was chosen as the best car, Karoutes was selected as the best special stage, while SSS OAKA, the supespercial through Athens’ Olympic Stadium in 2005, was chosen as the best moment.

Event organisers are planning another round inductions to the Hall of Fame next year with the aim of exhibiting photography, rally cars and other personal belongings within a special exhibition at the Greek Automobile Museum.

The WRC qualifier, which runs from 16-19 June, will feature a new logo and a new promotional strapline, The Rally of the Gods. According to the event organisers, the new logo is based on three major components: the Greek element, the intensity and complexity of the event and its historic value.

Based in Loutraki, the rally last ran in 2009 when Mikko Hirvonen took victory in a Ford Focus RS WRC. As well as counting as a round of the WRC, this year’s event is also a qualifying round of the SWRC.
