RACE CARS: More powerful CT on track

- Great, just what I need...

The GAZOO CT uses a bigger 2.4-litre engine.

Let us suspect: you must be one of those Lexus CT200h owners who aren't really satisfied with the performance, given the car's sporty chassis set-up and design concept.

Of course, the CT200h's hybrid drivetrain is meant for green credentials, but then you wonder why Lexus' other hybrids, like the RX450h and LS600h, give "extra" performance to match rivals with bigger engines and more cylinders.

- So the CT is going supercharged?

Well, err, yes and no. That picture you see here of the CT200h's petrol-hybrid engine strapped to an Eaton supercharger is the work of Fox Marketing. The blown motor produces some 300hp, meaning that other hybrid hardware also had to be modified.

Just to refresh some minds, Lexus has allowed Fox Marketing to modify the CT200h and displayed it at last month's New York Auto Show.

But don't expect this supercharged CT to be made by Lexus _ the technical concept is too unfamiliar to the Lexus brand philosophy and would be left to after-market tuners.

Fox Marketing adds a supercharger to CT.

- And what's with that stickered CT?

Oh, that one's called GAZOO Racing CT, which debuted at last weekend's endurance racing in Nurburgring, Germany.

The hybrid-powered racing car sees an engine increase from 1.8-litre to 2.4, although Lexus says the battery and other hybrid components remain the same as in the stock version.

- Yes! Is that four-pot engine from the Camry?

Lexus hasn't mentioned anything about this. But in theory, the CT could be using the Camry Hybrid's drivetrain (which could grow to 2.5-litre in the future) because both cars have a front-wheel-drive and transverse engine layout.

And considering that the overhaul isn't complicated, Lexus could be planning such a move for the CT. In fact, ever since the CT200h was launched, there were rumours that more powerful versions have been planned.

A potential newcomer is the CT300h, which will be cordial with today's tax system in Thailand since the engine doesn't exceed 3,000cc, thus allowing a special 10% rate, like for the CT200h.
