Robben: We won’t surrender third place now
30.04.2011
A fulminating overall display with a breathtaking first-half performance enabled Bayern to brush aside Champions League semi-finalists Schalke on Saturday and reclaim third spot in the Bundesliga table. The Bayern camp was buzzing with satisfaction afterwards. “Right from the start, there was real bite to our tackling, like against Leverkusen,” commented two-goal Thomas Müller, as delighted as the rest of his team-mates with the result and Hannover’s slip-up at home to Monchangladbach. “We definitely won’t surrender third place now,“ a determined Arjen Robben declared.
Reaction to Bayern v Schalke:
Andries Jonker: “We’re delighted with this victory, which puts us two points ahead of Hannover. I think we were outstanding in the first 35 minutes. I reckon we have huge potential. We’re capable of winning everything there is to win, but to play to our potential, we have to be up for it over the full 90 minutes. We’re doing whatever we can to finish third. But there’s no reason for complacency now. We travel to St. Pauli next week, and we have to go there and win.“
Thomas Müller: “Right from the start, there was real bite to our tackling, like against Leverkusen. We got stuck in when we didn’t have possession. Our passing was exceptional in attack, it was incredible. Ultimately, you could say we’ve scored two or three goals fewer than we should have done. The thing leaving a sour taste in the mouth is that we’ve made so little of the potential in this team and we’re left with fighting for third place. We’re disappointed we’ve taken so little from the season. I think we’ll keep it going now. We’re away from home, and it’s a must-win trip. I’m certain we’ll hold onto third, provided we deliver. We delivered today.“
Arjen Robben: “That's the football we should always be playing. I think the first 45 minutes was our best half of the season. We showed so much passion and commitment. You could see it really doesn’t matter who we play, we’re capable of beating everyone. We definitely won’t surrender third place now. Obviously, you never know what can happen, so we have to believe in our quality, because nothing bad can happen to us if we play like that in our remaining games. Obviously, we have to keep working. You never get something for nothing.“
Manuel Neuer (Schalke captain): “We let them have too many chances, and all the chances were in the box, including all four goals. It's hard to stop shots from seven or eight yards. Normally we don’t have a problem with fitness. We’ve done well enough so far after midweek games, so there’s no easy explanation for today.“
