Spanish GP - A lot of new things and little grip

Montmelo, (Barcelona) 20 May – The fifth round of the Formula 1 World Championship got underway today with the first free practice session of the twenty first Spanish GP to be held at the Catalunya circuit. At the end of the ninety minutes, Mark Webber was fastest for Red Bull in 1.25.142, followed by team-mate Sebastian Vettel (1.26.149.) Third was Nico Rosberg (1.26.379) in the Mercedes, ahead of Fernando Alonso (1.26.480) in the Ferrari. In a crowd pleasing mood for all the fans from Asturias in the grandstands, Fernando’s visor sports the same blue sticker he used last year. There was virtually no grip this morning, which affected the Ferraris, particularly that of Felipe Massa, who finished sixteenth in 1.38.654. As usual on a Friday, the team worked on busy comparative test programme, splitting the work between the two cars, with both drivers using just a single set of hard tyres. They also practiced pit stops and starts. Testing of the many new parts on both 150º Italias will continue when second practice starts at 14h00 local time.
