SS2: Hirvonen snatches Sardinia lead

Wrc.com stage summary

Stage data: SS2, Monte Grighini Nord 1 (21.32 kilometres)

Stage description:
By Ford Abu Dhabi Team co-driver Miikka Anttila: “It is fast with blind crests and you have to have faith in your pacenotes. If there are slow places over a crest you have to believe this because if you don’t brake enough you can find yourself in the ditch. You are on a flat section first for about four kilometres. You then have a steep uphill section into a forest, past some wind turbines into a very wide and fast downhill section.”

How the action unfolded:
Mikko Hirvonen has moved into the lead of Rally d’Italia Sardegna by topping the times on stage two in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

The Finn had trailed Petter Solberg by three seconds following Friday’s opening test but now leads Sebastien Loeb by 10.5s. Solberg lost more than 40 seconds with a suspected mechanical glitch on his Citroen DS3 WRC.

Kris Meeke continues to impress in the MINI John Cooper Works WRC. He was third fastest through the stage and moves into fourth overall behind flying Russian Evgeny Novikov.

Jari-Matti Latvala stopped approximately six kilometres into the 21.32-kilometre test with damaged front-left suspension on his Fiesta. PG Andersson also stopped in the stage in his privateer Fiesta.
