EUROPEAN GP QUALIFYING: A LOT OF HOT AIR

on Jun 25, 2011

So, every historian on the pitwall had their big book of F1 facts out to discuss Sebastian and Red Bull Racing's pole position in Valencia and where we now stand in the grand historical scheme of things.

But all the talk is just talk, come 2pm tomorrow.

Most debate centred (pre-2pm) on either Vettel's slip in Montreal or how FIA rule-changes mid-season would affect Sebastian, Mark and the performance of the RB7.

Both counter-claimed with the best response possible: taking the front row. Pole number eight for Red Bull Racing this season.

The one bump in the road was Mark's Q2 which had looked precarious at times, but his final session demonstrated that in the right hands (and we have a pair of them), the RB7 is dominant around any circuit.

But, this is only Qualifying and while the front row is a nice place to start, as Christian said afterwards: "There are no points for today however and with the double DRS zone that we know will be very powerful here, it will make for a fascinating race tomorrow."

Elsewhere the talking points were Paul Di Resta's strong finish after scant timed practice laps, Maldonado's car trouble and Jaime Alguersuari who was unable to make the first cut in front of his second home crowd. Lewis Hamilton shrugged off his Montreal and Monaco midadventures to complete the top three and was the quicker of the McLarens, with Alonso and Massa in front of Button. Rosberg led his Mercedes team-mate Schumacher and Heidfeld and Sutil made up the final top ten.

So, the talking, discussion and debate will finally finish when the lights go out at the Valencia Marina at 2pm tomorrow. Then we're back to just man and machine.

...and tyres, strategy, DRS, Kers, the heat, 25 turns a lap and a swingbridge. Like the team principal says, it's going to be a fascinating race.
