Rosberg to tackle Nordschleife in Fangio’s 1954 Mercedes

At Silverstone it was Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso who got to sample historic F1 machinery, when he demonstrated the 375 F1 which Jose Froilan Gonzalez drove to the team’s first championship victory in the 1951 British Grand Prix. Next weekend in Germany it will be the turn of Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg.

Rosberg will have the honour of piloting Juan Manuel Fangio’s 1954 Mercedes on the Nurburging’s old Nordschleife layout. Fangio took victory - from Gonzalez - in the ’54 German Grand Prix at the wheel of his W196, with a winning time of just over 3 hours 45 minutes around the legendary 22.8-kilometre track.

"Coming to the Nurburgring for the German Grand Prix always feels very special to me,” said Rosberg. “There is so much history around this amazing track, especially for Mercedes-Benz with great drivers from the past having had such successful times on the Nurburgring and the legendary Nordschleife.”

Fangio’s ’54 win in Germany was the second of his four that year for Mercedes (he also won twice for Maserati), as the Argentinian driver powered to the second of his five drivers’ titles and his first since 1951.

Rosberg's best showing to date at the Nurburgring was his fourth place for Williams in 2009.
