Formula One Fantasy - Force India’s Adrian Sutil
Ever since his Grand Prix debut back in 2007, Force India’s Adrian Sutil has been quietly plugging away in the midfield. Five seasons into his Formula One career, Sutil’s started 80 races, scored 63 points, made one front-row start and achieved a best finish of fourth in Italy 2009. It’s hardly been the stuff of fantasy, but the young German has made steady progress and it’s certainly not stopped him dreaming. Here Sutil lists what he would ask for if he could have his F1 heart’s desire...
Q: You must choose a city for a new Formula One street circuit - which city, anywhere in the world, do you choose, and why?
Adrian Sutil: I would choose Las Vegas. I think it’s a great place and perfect for a Formula One race. People go there to have fun and to see something special.
Q: If you could choose one former world champion as your team mate, who would you choose and why?AS: I would choose Ayrton Senna. He is well known as one of the best drivers ever and I always want to compete against the best drivers.
Q: Formula One innovations of the past - ground effect, active suspension, turbocharging, six wheels, the list goes on. If you could bring back one past innovation, what would it be and why?
AS: Turbocharging and V12 Engines. I just love the sound of it and I’ve never driven a turbocharged race car. On normal roads it’s one of my favourite engine types.Q: What innovations would you like to see in the future?
AS: I would love to see a car built without regulations. It would be interesting to see how fast a F1 car would be. Probably too fast to drive but it would be amazing to see that.
Q: You can only drive at one circuit for the rest of your life - which circuit, past or present from anywhere in the world, do you choose?
AS: I would choose the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
Q: Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Tyrrell, March are just some of the teams that have departed the sport. Which former team would you most liked to have raced with and why?AS: I'm a big Ferrari fan and that's why I would have loved to race for them in the past, but also it’s one of my dreams for the future.
Q: You have to design a new Formula One circuit, combining all your favourite corners from other tracks around the world. Which three corners are top of your list and why?
AS: Eau Rouge at Spa, the Esses at Suzuka and Copse at Silverstone. They are all high-speed corners and wonderful to drive, especially with an F1 car. You experience very high G forces.Q: You can travel back in time and compete in any decade of Formula One racing, from the 1950s to the 1990s. Which decade would you choose and why?
AS: I would choose the 1960s onwards. I think it was an amazing time for racing. Great circuits and the cars were so different. Every car was unique and the regulations were still wide open.
Q: If you could pick two Formula One greats of the past (from different eras) to watch race against each other, who would you pick?
AS: Fangio against Senna.
Q: If you were a team boss, which current drivers would you pick first for your team (excluding yourself and your current team mate)?
AS: Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso.
Q: Just 19 of the world’s motor racing circuits feature on the current F1 calendar. You can add one more. Which circuit do you pick and why?
AS: I would add the A1 Ring, now called the Red Bull Ring. I really like the atmosphere there and the circuit is built in some beautiful countryside.
Q: You are having a dinner party and can invite four people from the world of motorsport, past or present. Who do you invite?
AS: Senna, Kimi Raikkonen, Nigel Mansell and Alonso.
Q: You are given the chance to drive any legendary Formula One car of the past (excluding those made by your own team). Which car would you choose?
AS: One of the old Mercedes silver arrow cars. I don't know which year but it should be old enough.
Q: Rooftop swimming pool, bowling alley, revolving sushi bar – just some of the features most F1 motorhomes don’t possess. If you could add one thing to your team’s motorhome, what would it be?AS: Probably a nice spa area.
Q: Imagine you have just won the world title. Where would you go for your celebratory meal and what would choose from the menu?
AS: I would call it the ‘No Limits’ dinner party. Invited guests can eat and drink as much they want. The restaurant should be a good one, of course, but not one specific one. The place of celebration would probably be Los Angeles or Las Vegas - two of the best places for a party.
