Villeneuve: Vettel not for beating

by Michelle Fortune , 02 July 2011

Former Formula 1 drivers' champion Jacques Villeneuve believes this year's title race is already over unless Sebastian Vettel 'does something stupid'.

Of the eight races already completed, Vettel has won six - he was second in the other two - and the German already finds himself 77 points clear of his nearest challenger.

The reigning world champion has looked unstoppable in 2011 and Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion, believes only Vettel stands in the way of him winning back-to-back titles.

"This year, definitely, the favourite is Vettel. He’s going to win it very easily unless he does something stupid," Villeneuve said.

"His car is incredible and he has a very strong team; everyone is behind him; the mechanics, the sponsors, a great car. When things are like that, you’re in the clouds — nothing can go wrong."

While Vettel can virtually do no wrong, Lewis Hamilton has found himself at the centre of a number of stinging comments following his collisions in both the Monaco and Canadian Grands Prix.

Three-time world champion Niki Lauda was particularly vocal in his criticism of the McLaren driver, warning that he would end up killing someone unless the authorities took action.

Villeneuve is a fan of Hamilton's driving style but he has warned the 2008 world champion needs to use his head more.

“Hamilton is aggressive and that’s good, it’s good to see that, but sometimes you have to know when to go for it and when to use your head," Villeneuve is quoted as saying by Spain’s Europa Press.
