BRITISH GP: RAIN, REGULATIONS AND TWO BOTTLES OF CHAMPAGNE

on Jul 10, 2011

So, while we increased our leads in both championships and got both our drivers on to the shiny new podium… we may have had better afternoons at Silverstone.

Mark lost his lead to Sebastian from the start, only to fight a tenacious Fernando Alonso for the first few intermediate laps.

Then? Then there was Perez crashing through a Pirelli barrier before the start, there was Button’s wheel coming off, there was Lewis worrying about his fuel, there was Daniel Ricciardo finishing his first grand prix and there was a slight mix-up in the Force India garage. Who also suffered unwanted interference with their airlines.

In the end, we achieved another double podium – with Sebastian second and Mark third. Mark had been closing in on Seb over the final laps, leading to some discussion as to whether they should have been allowed to fight for position. As it was, they did, but in front of so many members of the Factory who had worked so hard for a good finish result at its local race, the team could not risk throwing away 33 points (remember May 30 2010?). The team made the clear call at that late stage in the race to maintain position for the last few laps – as it did in Turkey two years ago when the drivers were the other way round. But, the rules have changed this season and it is permissible to request a driver back off his team-mate.

There has been a lot of discussion about rules and regulations this weekend. Christian said after the race that the diffuser issue has now been resolved, which is one thing. And the other of course is (that despite those constant FIA clarifications over the weekend) Mark took pole, Sebastian and he were on the podium and we leave for Germany with healthy leads in the Constructors’ and Drivers’ championships – and the top two spots in the latter are held by Red Bull drivers.

Next up... one of the other most famous and infamous circuits on the calendar.
