The paddock and pits might be brand new, but this morning, Silverstone circuit delivered some very old fashioned English summer weather, with the day starting cold enough to see your breath when you breathed….and it’s mid July!

The drivers managed to keep warm, fighting to keep their cars on track in slippery conditions as the early 9 o’clock start took place in the rain. It later dried out fractionally, but Scuderia Toro Rosso, along with the majority of teams, kept their slick tyres at the back of the garage for the 90 minutes. Jaime Alguersuari ended the morning with the tenth fastest time, completing 22 laps, while his team-mate, Sébastien Buemi was twelfth, doing 18 laps. No tyre comparison work was possible, especially as the rain returned towards the end, but there was plenty to do as drivers assessed the impact of running without the off-throttle blown diffuser as well as learning to tackle the entrance to the new pit lane, on top of the usual Friday tasks. Both our cars ran reliably throughout.

Mark Webber was quickest for Red Bull Racing, ahead of Michael Schumacher in the Mercedes and Rubens Barrichello in the Williams. Fourth fastest was Sergio Perez in the Sauber, followed by the Ferrari of Felipe Massa and the other Mercedes of Nico Rosberg. Hopefully, the second session, that starts at 13.00 local time will provide a dry track to work on.
