At least the rain stayed away this morning at Silverstone allowing drivers to try slick tyres for the first time this weekend. But it’s still unseasonably cold, as the wind whips across the wide open spaces of the former airfield. Jaime Alguersuari and Sébastien Buemi had a trouble-free morning, completing 20 laps of the 5.891 kilometre track. The Spaniard was sixteenth on the timesheet, with the Swiss driver one place behind him.

Reigning world champion and series leader Sebastian Vettel was fastest with team-mate Mark Webber third, while Fernando Alonso was the meat in a Red Bull sandwich, second fastest in the Ferrari. Felipe Massa in the other Prancing Horse was fourth with Pastor Maldonaldo fifth for Williams, ahead of the McLaren of Jenson Button.
