RAIN CAUSES PAIN

A short qualifying session today for Scuderia Toro Rosso, as neither Jaime Alguersuari nor Sébastien Buemi made the cut through to Q2, so that the Spaniard starts on the outside of row 9 of the grid, in 18th sport alongside Heikki Kovalainen in the Lotus and the Swiss driver is 19th, sharing row 10 with the Virgin of Timo Glock. In simple terms, just as both our drivers left the pits for their second run in Q1, their first on the much quicker Option tyre from Pirelli, the heavens opened yet again, making the track far too wet to set a competitive time.

In these circumstances it’s best to look for positives and there are a few ahead of tomorrow’s ninth round of the World Championship. One, both our drivers have plenty of fresh soft compound tyres for the 52 lap British Grand Prix as they did not use them today; two, the STR 6 ran competitively in the wet yesterday and it might just rain again on Sunday and three, we have scored points starting from similar grid positions, with Jaime coming home eighth in Canada from eighteenth and eighth, having started from pit lane a fortnight ago in Valencia.

Mark Webber took his second pole position of the season, to the delight of the crowd, as the Australian has always been a big hit with the Silverstone fans. Bigger news in some ways was the fact Sebastian Vettel was not on pole, the first time in three years he will not start this race from the number one slot. However second place on the front row is not going to give the German driver a sleepless night. Behind the all-blue Red Bull front row, we have an all-red second row, as Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa qualified third and fourth for Ferrari. The British fans have to look as far back as the third row to find the first home-grown driver, in the shape of fifth placed Jenson Button in the McLaren, who has an impressive Paul di Resta on his outside, after the Scottish Force India man secured his best ever F1 grid position in sixth place.
