The first free practice session at the Hungaroring always follows the same pattern, as no one wants the job of road sweeper at a track that is dusty and lacking grip on the opening day.

Gradually though, everyone gets out there to get on with the job and in fact Jaime Alguersuari racked up the highest number of laps of the 24 drivers over the ninety minutes, completing no less than 36, on his way to seventeenth-fastest time, but lap times mean very little, especially when you are going for such a long distance run. Sébastien Buemi was one place ahead of his team-mate on the time sheet, completing 28 laps. Budapest has seen a lot of rain recently, including overnight, but the track was dry for this session and conditions appear to be getting warmer in the run up to the afternoon practice. German GP winner Lewis Hamilton topped the time sheet for McLaren followed by Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull and Fernando Alonso, whose thirtieth birthday it is today, in the Ferrari.
