iWitness in Silverstone: Saturday

Posted on Sunday 10 Jul 2011

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s AT&T Williams account manager Richard Lavers! This is Ravers’ first race since he went on paternity leave (baby Henry is doing well) and jolly nice it is to see him too. What we all want to know is: will he be in Germany?

Big stress for our celebrity chef Michael Caines. He lost the keys to his Porsche last night and had to hitch a lift back to the hotel. But by the time he’d arrived at the track this morning, they’d been handed into Lost Property and all was good in the world. One Porsche back with its rightful owner.

Points are only handed out on Sundays in Formula One, but for one lucky punter it was Saturday that mattered at Silverstone. Ladbrokes took a £20,000 bet this morning that Webber would take pole for tomorrow’s British Grand Prix and they gave odds of 5:1. A nice little earner for someone – who’s asked to remain nameless!

Nigel Mansell, the FIA’s driver steward at Silverstone, is looking very trim this weekend. And there is a reason: “I cycled with my boys from London to Paris last week,” the 57-year-old told iWitness. “We did about 120 miles a day for three days. As you can imagine, everything hurt by the end!”
