Bright prospects for Alonso in Hungary

2/8/2011

Fernando Alonso posted the second best time in Free Practice Session 2 at the Hungary Grand Prix. The Spanish driver was the closest on the heels of the fastest: McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton.

Fernando Alonso clocked second fastest time at the Free Practice 2 sessions at the Hungary Grand Prix. The Spanish driver managed a time of 1:21.259, and was flying on his ultra-soft tyres, although he used most of the session to carry out race simulations.

Alonso: “If I were Vettel I wouldn’t be nervous at all”

Fernando Alonso talked about German Sebastian Vettel's (Red Bull) position. “It depends on each person. I don’t know what’s in his (Vettel’s) head right now. If I were him, I wouldn’t be nervous at all. He only has to come in fourth or fifth until the end of the year in order to be the champion. I think if I had a Red Bull and I had to come in fourth or fifth until the end of the year, I wouldn’t be very worried. I don’t think Hamilton would be either,” he said this afternoon after wrapping up the second free practice session at the Hungaroring.

Fernando Alonso reported that he drew positive conclusions from the programme Ferrari followed today, including key information, such as the serious wear on the ultra-soft tyres used, and also on his alternative component (soft).

“It’s tomorrow when we have to draw some good conclusions. Today we did the typical Friday tests: adjustments to the car, both mechanical and aerodynamic, and now we’ll have to decide which went well and which didn't. McLaren looked very strong to us,” he noted.

“We noticed quite significant deterioration in the tyres, but nothing that we weren’t expecting. In Monaco when these tyres were used, the fastest strategy was Button’s, with three pit stops, and it was 250 km there. So here, with 300, the teams will be making between three and four pit stops. We'll have to keep this information in mind for Saturday and the strategy for the qualification phase, and how many laps to do on each kind of tyre,” he added.

“In the first races a victory was impossible. We tried to make podiums and get close to them. In the first races of the year I started fifth. Now we look forward to this weekend, like the last two, knowing that for the qualification phase we can be among the top five, but also second or first. And later, in the race, we can also be up there with the leaders,” he reasoned.

Free Practice 1

Fernando Alonso completed his first practice runs at the Hungaroring racing circuit. As is habitual on Fridays, the racing team’s first runs focused on aerodynamics and major new developments. For this event the rear wing of the F150º Italia appeared covered with paraffin.

For this session Alonso opted for soft tyres (remember that for this Grand Prix Pirelli has come with soft and ultra-soft tyres, and nothing else.)
