Triumphant podium for Alonso in Hungary

2/8/2011

Fernando Alonso pulled off an incredible third place in a thrilling Grand Prix of Hungary, where Jenson Button was the winner.

Fernando Alonso expressed great satisfaction with his fourth consecutive podium, after placing third at Hungary's GP.

“I’m very happy. We started fifth and we ended up third. So, it was a good race,” said the Spanish driver, who has been up on the podium ever since his second place finish in Valencia (first in England and second in Germany).

“This month of July has been really good for us. Experiencing the podium again, the champagne and the celebration is good. We’ve improved the car and we’ve closed the gap a lot on the fastest cars, and now we can fight for races,” he noted after finishing the event at the Hungaroring.

Alonso stressed that he is the driver who has scored the most points over the last three races (55 points) in a month he described as “frenetic.”

“So, I am optimistic about the second part of the championship,” which will kick off the last week of August in Spa, after “three weeks of holidays during which we have to recharge our batteries,” he emphasized.

A very exciting race

Fernando Alonso had been guarded on the eve of the race in Hungary, stating that he would need a perfect Sunday in order to walk away with something positive. The Spanish driver’s predictions were fulfilled as he had a great race, the Ferrari driver managing to masterfully exploit his competition’s mistakes.

After a difficult start in which the rain was the great foe, Alonso was able to recover and place fifth.

The Spaniard had a stirring struggle with Mark Webber, Alonso edging him out at the end of the race. The Spaniard was also successful at taking advantage of his competitors’ error in shifting to intermediate tyres rather than hard ones, something which Alonso read perfectly, ultimately allowing him to position himself as the race's third fastest driver.
