ALMS – A new challenge for Ferrari at Mid Ohio
Maranello, 6 August – Competitors in the American Le Mans Series yesterday tackled two qualifying sessions for the fifth round of the season, taking place this weekend at the Mid-Ohio circuit. There are three 458 Italia GT2 cars taking part and the best performance came from the Houston Risi Competizione team, who with Jaime Melo at the wheel, set the third fastest time in 1.20.745. In the fifteen minutes of qualifying, the Brazilian faced stiff opposition with the two RLL BMWs and he chose to save the Michelin tyres for the sprint race which awaits him and team-mate Toni Vilander, today at 15.30. “Track temperature was rather high and effected tyre performance,” commented Melo after the session. “However, the car’s handling is excellent, although we will have to wait and see how things go in the race on full tanks. But if you look at the times we did in the past races, we can expected to have a real fight on our hands.”
The two other 458 Italia GT2s entered by Extreme Speed Motorsport also did very well, qualifying in the top ten, just a few seconds off pole sitter Joey Hand (BMW) which confirms that the cars entered by the Maranello marque have great potential.
