LEAVING IT SPA BEHIND
29/08/2011
And so we have it; our first weekend as a new-look Lotus Renault GP outfit ended with mixed feelings. Bruno’s sterling debut qualifying performance yesterday was evidence enough that LRGP is back, and ready to cause a stir in the top ten again. And, if it wasn’t for a spin on one of his Q3 laps, Vitaly may well have been jostling for a grid position of sixth or seventh with his team mate.
As Bruno said himself in his post-race interview, the odds of him a very successful race at the top end were quite low; yes the grid position did cause heightened expectation in the team ranks but, all in all, we cannot be too disappointed with today’s performance. The pace of the car was clearly there, aside from his mistake at the first corner Bruno’s pace was evident for all to see, and if it wasn’t for a brake problem in the dying stages then Vitaly would have come home a respectable eighth rather than ninth. The past three days have most definitely been a step in the right direction and have provided the team with a spring in its step.
So it is now that we leave the fearsome, the mighty, the adored Spa-Francorchamps behind. The team takes with it the hope, the promise that it may just have turned a corner in this most engaging of Formula 1 seasons. In our wake lies Monza, another flavour of the F1 calendar that the drivers crave. The stands there may be just a sea of Ferrari, but we’ll be hoping to give our own comrades something to shout about.
