HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX: MARGINS MAINTAINED
on Jul 31, 2011
It wasn’t a win for Sebastian, but after another action-packed Hungarian Grand Prix, it was a step on the podium and he remains the leader of the Drivers’ Championship. And now by a margin of 85 points.
Behind him in the title-race sits Mark after a solid fifth here at the Hungaroring. And the consistency of both our drivers means Red Bull Racing leads the Constructors’ Championship by 103 points from McLaren, with Ferrari another 65 points behind them.
The race was described by Christian as ‘tricky’, but a great spectacle for the fans who braved the unseasonal weather. Rain threatened, arrived, went and returned in a grand prix which saw not only slides on the track, but also in the Virgin pitlane - plus there was a Renault catching fire as it re-joined the track. And, although his car was badly damaged, Heidfeld’s sense of humour remained in good nick. Asked on German television if he had been burned, he replied that no, his race overalls were black when he started the race…
Our opponents were the usual suspects, including a resurgent Jenson Button who was keen to demonstrate the tales of his accident last night were anywhere near being true. At the circuit he first won a grand prix and on his 200th time on the grid he calmly steered around the slippery track, and his team-mate, to take the win.
While Sebastian was podium-bound, Mark was left ruing a decision to change to intermediates when threatened rain wasn’t as heavy as he anticipated. He said: "The gamble didn’t work out. I’m fine with the decision I made it’s on my head and the team did a great job this weekend."
Before Spa there’s the chance to kick back, take stock and recharge some batteries before the final eight races of the 2011 campaign. There’s still some way to go.
