Alonso finishes fourth in Singapore

Alonso missed out on a podium finish by a whisker in Singapore, despite an excellent performance around the Marina Bay track. The Spaniard had more than his fair share of tyre issues, causing him a number of problems.

Fernando Alonso did not make it onto the podium in Singapore, after finishing in fourth place behind Vettel, Button and Webber. The Spanish driver had to fight his own battle with the Pirelli tyres, which caused him problems from the outset.

Nonetheless Alonso did make an excellent start, overtaking Mark Webber off the grid. “I made a very good start and gained the odd place. And I even had a chance to get past Button at the start... Then I had a bit of degradation (on the tyres), above all in the first part of the race,” explained Alonso, who failed to make the podium in Singapore for the first time.

On lap 10 he had real trouble with his tyres, allowing Webber to overtake him and forcing him into the pits for a tyre change.

The circumstances of the race meant that Alonso came up against Webber once again when the Australian reclaimed third place. This time he was able to defend his position better thanks to Kers. On lap 25 the Spanish driver made his second pit stop and the Ferrari mechanics fitted him with a new set of softs. “We had a six-second lead over Webber, but after the safety car came out he was right up behind us and when we restarted he overtook,” said Alonso, who also ran into backmarker trouble. “Some find it more difficult to focus on the car,” said Alonso, regarding the backmarkers.

He decided to make his last pit stop on lap 50, fitting a set of soft tyres and almost running into a Lotus at the exit from the pitlane.

“The fact is that we were slower, and sooner or later we were getting overtaken. Fourth place is all we could manage today,” declared Fernando after the race. “We lacked pace all weekend, in the race too,” he concluded.
