Adrian Sutil: “It was quite a good session today”
Friday ,9 September 2011
Adrian Sutil finished the FP2 session at Monza in 12th place, just ahead of team-mate Paul Di Resta. Here’s what Adrian had to say after a busy day at the track
Do you have a good feeling for the direction to go with set-up?
“Yes I have a good feeling, it was quite a good session today, with no problems. The car worked well. We were just not as competitive as I thought, probably. It’s just a Friday so it could change tomorrow. Right now we’re 12th, but it’s very close, so we just have to make sure that we are 100% on it in qualifying. It’s a tricky one. We need some top speed still, we are not so fast on the straights, and we need to find the right compromise, and also a good setting for the race. The DRS switch is quite big when you on higher downforce levels, so it’s good for qualifying, but maybe not so good for the race. We had a lot of different settings on the car today, and now we have to investigate what’s the best.”
What was your feeling on how easy it will be to overtake in the DRS zones?
“It’s difficult to overtake. It’s good to have two DRS zones, but it’s still hard work to get past another car, because there are so many high speed corners before the long straights. That makes it difficult to follow another car closely. If you have a bad exit all your advantage is away again and it’s not enough at the end of the straight, so I think it’s going to be difficult. Not impossible, but not as easy as it was in Spa.”
So did you follow people who had their DRS closed?
“Yes, it was very difficult to follow close through a corner, and then be in a position to pass another car. I knew where the DRS zone was, where the activation point was, so I pressed it at that time.”
Do you think that you need to take downforce off?
“Maybe we have to see what’s possible, if it’s efficient, our downforce level, then we can try it. We need top speed. The grip will increase on Saturday a little bit, and then it’s possible for us to handle the lower downforce. We have to see and analyse everything first.”
