Paul Di Resta: “In the running I’ve had it’s been quite strong”

Saturday ,24 September 2011

Paul Di Resta had a frustrating evening in Singapore on his first acquaintance with the demanding street circuit. Like the other rookies Paul needed as much track time as possible, but 30 minutes was trimmed from FP1 by a late start due to dislodged kerbs, and red flags cost more valuable time. A problem with a brake line then reduced his running in FP2. Here’s what he had to say

How did things go today?
“I think in general our performance isn’t too bad. We’ve shown quite strongly, for the limited time I’ve had. Adrian has shown the car is on the pace, but I can’t say much.”

Were you able to learn much about the car?
“I’ve got an idea, but we’ve got no tyre wear data, we’ve got no idea how the balance is for the start of the race. It’s been inconclusive. I suppose we’ve just got to go with our baseline set-up for Saturday and go for it – what else can you take from it? I think the other car obviously learned a bit, although both cars were supposed to be doing slightly different programmes.”

So you might have to go the route Adrian took because that’s a safer option?
“I don’t know, that’s a decision I suppose the team will have to make.”

Adrian was up there in seventh in the second session. Was that encouraging?
“I was quite happy with the car on the prime tyres. In the running I’ve had, it has been quite strong.”

Did you have fun out there during the laps you did?
“Yeah I think it’s quite a good track. It’s obviously very technical, there’s a lot to it. It’s a bit like Monaco. There’s not much room for error, but you certainly have to get close to the walls to see the maximum.”

Can you recover on a street circuit after losing so much time?
It’s not going to be an easy task. The guys worked really hard to get the car ready on time, and credit to them, especially under this heat.

What did you make of the problems with the kerbs?
“It is a bit of a concern, but I suppose the right decision was taken, if they were unsafe, not to go out. I think they’ll revise them overnight. It’ll be interesting to see what the layout will be for Saturday, and how different that will be.”
