McLaren ready for Pirelli’s reduced camber limit
McLaren’s principal race engineer Phil Prew believes the British team are well prepared for the expected introduction of more conservative camber guidelines from official tyre suppliers Pirelli at this weekend's Italian race.
The move to reduce the maximum recommended camber angle for Monza follows controversy at the recent Spa round where some teams - including title leaders Red Bull - started the race on blistered tyres after their set-ups went beyond the suggested camber limits. Pirelli are confident a more conservative approach will help prevent a similar situation in Italy.
“At all events we will work with Pirelli to optimise the car performance following their recommendations, optimising durability, lap time, grip, degradation etc,” Prew explained in a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Phone-In. “That’s part of the normal development testing work we do over a race weekend.
“We’ve done some work to look at some options that the camber constraints may impose on us. We have solutions that minimise the impact on our car. So hopefully we are prepared and we will test and work with Pirelli on Friday to have a better understanding of the constraints and have a successful race.”
Unlike at Spa, where a lack of dry running contributed to set-up issues, sunny conditions are forecast for Friday (and the rest of the weekend) at Monza, so the teams should have plenty of time to adjust their cars to the new restrictions. The on-track action in Italy begins with Practice One on Friday morning.
