iWitness in Singapore: Thursday

Is it really necessary to keep European time while in the Far East? After all, the 8pm race start on Sunday isn’t exactly late… One person who’s not complaining, however, is AT&T Williams star Pastor Maldonado. He’s been home to Venezuela since the last race to do some PR work for sponsor PDVSA and the topsy-turvy timetable in Singapore means he only has to get his head around the five-hour time difference between Venezuela and Europe, rather than the 11-hour gap to Singapore!
We had our first celebration of the weekend today (and hopefully not our last! – Ed) when the race team wished Rubens’ race engineer Tom McCullough a happy birthday. He’s reached the grand old age of 36. How does it feel to be closer to 40 than 30, Tom?
Where are the tissues? It’s time to bid some sad farewells this weekend. AT&T Williams technical director Sam Michael, senior account manager Richard Lavers and electrician Paul Bray are all attending their last race for the team. Thank you for all that you’ve done over the years, guys; now let’s make this weekend a good one!
It’s a well-known fact that cycling is growing in popularity around the world, but it was still a surprise to see Emilio Botin, the 77-year-old chairman of Santander, cycling the Marina Bay circuit with Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso last night. Fernando tried to convince iWitness that he couldn’t keep up, but we find that hard to believe...
