Singapore's Q & A with Rubens Barrichello

Posted on Friday 23 Sep 2011

Rubens Barrichello has finished sixth in the Singapore Grand Prix for the last two years. Will the upgrades being introduced on the FW33 this weekend be enough to propel him into the points for a third successive year?

Q: Do you see this weekend as an opportunity for AT&T Williams?
Rubens Barrichello: “Every race is an opportunity. I don’t think we’d ever go to a race and think it wasn’t an opportunity. AT&T Williams have done well here in the past and while that doesn’t mean we’re going to be at the top this year, clearly we know some set-up secrets for this place that might help us. I hope we’ll perform a bit better here.”

Q: How much has the car improved over the past few races?
RB: “The last few tracks have been high-speed and I think that has helped us relative to our main opposition. Marina Bay is a very low-speed track, however, so we’ll have to see. There are a lot of factors to consider here: if it’s very abrasive on the tyres, suddenly Sauber are going to perform better, so we’ll have to see.”

Q: Are you hoping for a wet race?
RB: “It would mix things up and I like racing in the wet; if it rains, I smile. I’ve always done well in the wet since I was in karting and I just enjoy it. There are some drivers who are quick in the dry who say ‘oh my god’ when it rains and that’s very negative for them. It becomes a blockage that they have to overcome before they even get in the car.”

Q: Sebastian Vettel can win the world title this weekend. What’s your attitude towards him winning it with five races to go?
RB: “People have won the title a long time before the end of the season since the early ’50s, so it’s nothing new. I don’t actually think he’ll win it here; it’s possible, but he’s more likely to do it at the next race, in Japan. Even when the championship’s no longer open, the races would still be fun. I think it’s only the journalists that would be sad because they’d no longer have anything to write!”
