Trina Solar and Lotus Renault GP at the inaugural Grand Prix of India

28/10/2011

The eyes of the sporting world turn to South Asia this week for the inaugural Formula 1TM Airtel Grand Prix of India. Coinciding with the country’s Diwali festivities, the race will draw celebrities, fans and VIPs from India and across the globe, and is the result of years of planning and preparation.

As the sixth Asian race on the 2011 Formula 1 calendar, India reasserts the continent’s role on the world’s sporting and business stage.

Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL) products provide reliable and environmentally-friendly power for a growing number of commercial, residential, and utility scale applications across the world and, last year, became the first among the global solar companies to be named an official sponsor of a Formula One team, Lotus Renault GP.

The partnership was inspired by Trina Solar’s belief that the time was right for a high-technology manufacturing establishment such as Lotus Renault GP to include solar energy in their business model. In turn, the visibility and access provided by Lotus Renault GP, a team competing at the highest level of motorsport, offers a valuable case study in echoing the message that solar power is now mature enough to help a wide range of businesses.

Historically, motor racing has not been perceived as a sport with great green credentials but, in recent years, the FIA and the teams have worked hard on changing this perception and have steered their research towards areas of technology that would prove environmentally beneficial.

In Lotus Renault GP, Trina Solar found a strategic partner purposeful in its promotion of green issues and determined in its quest to lower its carbon emissions. Patrick Louis, LRGP’s COO explains: “This is a partnership between two top players in their respective fields and, naturally, we have high expectations. We are proud to showcase solar PV technology in our paddock-based hospitality, where we are able to monitor the energy generated so that our guests can keep checks on the system efficiency. Our projects, however, go well beyond this. In today’s world, no business can ignore alternative energy and further solar solutions will be in place at our headquarters in Enstone soon.”
