KOREAN GRAND PRIX: THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER

by redbullracing.com, Oct 11, 2011

Shiny and new, the Korea International Circuit appeared on the F1 calendar for the first time last year... but, let's face it, we are hoping for better things at the new circuit this season.

Why? Because the 2010 race wasn’t one to remember for us as both Sebastian and Mark came away with a DNF beside their names. The only one of the year. Or since.

After a rain-delayed start, Mark exited the race on the 18th lap after hitting a kerb, wall and then a Mercedes. Seb’s RB6, meanwhile, encountered technical difficulties on lap 46 while he was leading. A cloud of smoke billowed from his RB6, forcing him to find a place to park up, grab a fire extinguisher and watch his engine, his lead and his race go up in smoke.

It seemed, at the time, a blow to our hopes of securing two championships.

The track is made up of a temporary street circuit section, which is included for the grand prix, and a 3km permanent track, which is used all year round. There are three high-speed straights along this anti-clockwise track, the longest a 1.2km stretch. There are 18 turns on a 5.615km lap. The race is 55 laps, a distance of 308.630km.

Fernando Alonso was the first winner of the Korean Grand Prix and the Spaniard also holds the lap record of 1:50.257.

Just over 370km from the South Korean capital Seoul, the circuit is in a rural part of the South Jeolla region alongside the coast. The surrounding scenery is ever-changing, as the city of Jeollanam-do is being developed around the track.
