The double world champion was second on the timesheets, posting a best time of 2:02.840 after eight laps in a rain-affected session.
Mark was the morning's 10th-fastest driver, with a best time of 2:05.183 after five laps.
They will be in action again at 2pm local time for Free Practice 2.
