ASK THE GP NATION: KOREA
12 OCTOBER 2011
@heyk is not the only one, we “can’t wait for another good weekend of brilliant racing” either!
Goodbye Japan, Hello South Korea. We’ve travelled more than 1000 kilometres and here we are in ‘the Land of the Morning Calm’. Why? Well, we have to go back to 1934 A.D. when an emperor of the Ming dynasty of China gave Korea the title of ‘Chaohsien’, meaning morning freshness. This particularly suited South Korea because of its picturesque high mountains, clear waters and morning tranquillity.
But F1 is here in the South Jeolla region, breaking that calm for a week. As @heyk says, we can’t wait for “another good weekend of brilliant racing!” This is only the second year Formula One has visited Korea, but what a first race and you remember it well. For @JackHammer92 it was all about “mud, rain, Webber crashing, Petrov crashing, Safety Car…” @scuderia_85 remembers “Alonso’s win and the cheering afterwards” while @AilishCatherine has one abiding memory – “rain, rain and more rain!” And it did rain indeed. So much, that the rain was suspended for 45 minutes. @jacko254 found it most annoying to “get up at 6am to find the race didn’t start until 8 because of the weather!” But it was an exciting race in the end and if not ask @heyk who was “absolutely delighted with the exciting racing once the green flag was shown” but was “annoyed with the delay as I had to study for exams.”
For @lacanta it was “fun”, while the only thing @thescottwilkes remembers is “the endless Safety Car period. ENDLESS.” So let’s see what happens this year! But if we listen to @EnigmaF1, the excitement is guaranteed again, as he describes the Korea International Circuit as “a track with a great flow and possibilities to overtake – one of the best new tracks!”
We certainly feel the love here in Mokpo – to answer @rachelclarkef1 or @GrandPrixDiary’s tweets. It’s interesting here - #MVRtruckies enjoy going bowling, #MVRpr found a pleasant little coffee bar to spend the day and #MVRevents enjoyed a Korean BBQ restaurant last night.
So we may be in the ‘Land of the Morning Calm’ but, at least for a week, we convert it to the ‘Land of F1 excitement’.
