Korea's Q&A with Pastor
Posted on Friday 14 Oct 2011
Pastor Maldonado is about to experience his second new track in the space of a week. Here he gives us his thoughts ahead of the Korean Grand Prix.
Q. What are your first impressions of the Korean International Circuit?
PM: I’ve never been to this track before and my first impressions are very positive. I walked it with my engineers on Thursday and it seems to have a good flow. Sector 1 has a long straight, sector 2 looks very technical, with a good flow of medium-speed corners, and sector three is twisty and busy. It’s going to be fun.
Q. Do you think it will be possible to overtake?
PM: The long straights are all followed by tight corners, which should make it possible to overtake. The longest straight is between Turns 2 and 3 and we’ll get to use the DRS along there, which should help overtaking.
Q. Do you think the FW33 will be competitive?
PM: My pace in the final stint of the Japanese Grand Prix last weekend was pretty good. If we can start where we ended at Suzuka, we should be okay. It’s important that we run trouble-free in every practice session so that I can learn the circuit and work on the set-up of the car. My goal at every race is to score points.
Q. Wet weather is forecast for Friday. Is that a problem for you?
PM: I think Saturday and Sunday are going to be dry, so I would prefer Friday to be dry as well, but I don’t believe it’s going to be! The rain on Friday means I’ll be very busy during FP3 on Saturday morning because that will be my only chance to learn the braking points before qualifying.
Q. What do you think of Korea as a country?
PM: I haven’t had so much time to look at the country. I stayed in Japan until Wednesday and then came straight to Mokpo. I haven’t had a chance to go around Seoul, which I hear is a great city. I love new experiences, however, and I enjoyed my first trip to Japan last week and I’m enjoying my first trip to Korea so far.
