Abu Dhabi GP - Massa: “working intensively towards next year”
Yas Marina, 10 November – Felipe Massa has been in Abu Dhabi for a couple of days already, but today was the start of the routine part of a race weekend, which as always begins with a press meeting. The Brazilian was reminded he had just two more chances to finish on the podium in 2011 and the Scuderia Ferrari man explained why this situation had arisen. “We have worked a lot on qualifying, after the first part of the championship where we were not where we should have been in terms of grid position,” he began. “Thanks to a lot of effort, we are now much more consistent in this and so we have managed to put in some very strong qualifying performances from August onwards. We improved the pace, but then in the race, for a variety of reasons, I have not been able to exploit that to get the results I should have done but clearly the races did not go as they should have done. However, the positive factor is that we are much more consistent now and that is the important thing.
“We have not had the championship we wanted and if I have not made it to the podium so far, it’s because for 30 to 40% of the races something happened that lost me time during the race. If you look at all the races as a whole, you would have to say that our chances of getting to the podium were not so great, therefore, if on top of that I had problems in those races where I might have got to the podium, then this explains why I have not made it to the top three.”
The subject of Felipe’s front wing changes in India a fortnight ago was still interesting the media, so he explained what had been the situation as clearly as he could: “We had fitted an updated front wing and discovered it touched the ground a lot on Friday when running at high speed. So, we replaced it for the Qualifying on Saturday, but that one broke when I hit the kerb. This meant we had to run the newer wing that touched the ground, on Sunday in the race. It would touch the most when using the DRS and as we don’t use DRS so often in the race itself, we decided it would not be too much of a problem. What we do now know from back to back testing is that the new one is better than the old, offering a performance advantage.”
Despite the many disappointments he has had to endure over this season, Felipe is still motivated for these final two rounds. “Now we must still concentrate hard on these two remaining races to try for a last time to get a podium, while also working intensively towards next year to ensure that this sort of situation does not repeat itself. We have to think we did some things that were not right, things I did not do the way I would have liked and so there is pressure, the pressure you put on yourself.”

Yas Marina, 10 novembre – Già ad Abu Dhabi da un paio di giorni, per Felipe Massa la consueta routine che scandisce un weekend di gara si è avviata quest’oggi con l’abituale incontro con la stampa. Al brasiliano è stato fatto presente come gli rimangano ormai solo due occasioni per poter salire sul podio nel 2011, e Felipe ha spiegato il perché della situazione in cui si ritrova. “Dopo la prima parte di campionato, in cui non eravamo dove avremmo dovuto in termini di posizioni in griglia, abbiamo lavorato molto sulla qualifica”, ha esordito il pilota Ferrari. “Grazie a un grande sforzo, siamo adesso molto più costanti e siamo quindi riusciti, da agosto in avanti, a ottenere delle buone prestazioni in qualifica. Abbiamo migliorato la nostra velocità, ma in gara, per diversi motivi, non sono stato in grado di sfruttare le nostre migliorate prestazioni per ottenere quei risultati che avrei dovuto cogliere. Ovviamente le gare non sono andate come avrebbero dovuto. La cosa importante, comunque, è che adesso siamo molto più consistenti”.
“Non abbiamo avuto il campionato che volevamo, e se non sono ancora salito sul podio è perché nel 30-40% dei GP di questa stagione è successo qualcosa che mi ha fatto perdere tempo in gara. Guardando nel complesso, dovremmo dire che le nostre possibilità di salire sul podio nelle gare di questa stagione non sono state così elevate. Se per di più ho avuto problemi in quelle corse in cui sarei potuto salire sul podio, allora ecco spiegato perché non ho mai concluso nelle prime tre posizioni”.
I cambiamenti all’alettone anteriore della monoposto di Felipe due settimane fa in India si sono rivelati un argomento che ancora quest’oggi non ha mancato di destare interesse tra i giornalisti. Il pilota brasiliano ha quindi spiegato nel modo più chiaro possibile quanto successo: “Dopo aver montato un’ala anteriore aggiornata, abbiamo scoperto nelle libere del venerdì che alle alte velocità sfiorava di molto l’asfalto. L’abbiamo quindi sostituita per le qualifiche del sabato, ma si è danneggiata quando ho preso il cordolo. Siamo quindi dovuti ritornare all’ala precedente, quella che sfiorava l’asfalto, per la gara di domenica. Considerando che il fenomeno si verificava quando utilizzavamo il DRS, e che in gara lo avremmo impiegato con minore frequenza, abbiamo deciso che non sarebbe stato un problema l’impiego di questa ala. Quello che sappiamo adesso, dopo questi test in pista, è che il nuovo alettone è migliore del precedente, e offre un vantaggio in termini di prestazioni”.
A dispetto delle molte delusioni di questa stagione, Felipe è comunque ancora motivato per gli ultimi due appuntamenti stagionali. “Dobbiamo concentrarci duramente su queste due ultime gare per provare a salire sul podio, oltre a lavorare intensamente in vista del prossimo anno per assicurarsi che non si ripeta una simile situazione. Dobbiamo pensare che abbiamo fatto alcune cose che non erano giuste, cose che non ho fatto come avrei voluto. E quindi c’è pressione, quella pressione che metti a te stesso”.
