2011 Tokyo Auto Show: First Look: Subaru Impreza S206

By Jake Holmes

Subaru has released another special-edition version of the Impreza WRX STI. Like the previous Impreza R205, the new S206 is a limited-run model with a range of engine and chassis upgrades. Just 300 copies of the S206 will be produced.

The STI's turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four engine receives a new turbocharger, new exhaust, larger intercooler, and new engine programming to up power to 315 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque. Subaru says the engine and throttle mapping provide for greater low-speed torque and drivability. The suspension is upgraded with bespoke Bilstein shock absorbers and new front strut-tower bracing, as well as unique 19-inch BBS aluminum wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

Outside, the S206 wears a new front spoiler, trunk spoiler, and new vents on top of the front fenders. Interior garnishments comprise a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Alcantara-wrapped Recaro bucket seats, and red seatbelts.

Of the 300 examples built, 100 will be blessed with a special NBR Challenge Package that is designed to celebrate Subaru's class win at June's 24 Hours of Nuerburgring race. The pack adds a carbon-fiber roof, adjustable carbon-fiber rear spoiler, black 19-inch wheels, and S206 Nuerburgring Challenge badges. All 100 copies of the NBR package have already been pre-ordered.

The Impreza S206, as is the case with most special-edition Imprezas, will not be sold in the U.S. Over in Japan, prices start at the equivalent of about $66,000. It will make its official debut later this week at the Tokyo auto show, along with the Advanced Tourer concept and production-spec BRZ sports car.
