2011 BMW 128i Coupe
To me, in terms of performance, the BMW 128i makes more sense than 135i. Power doesn't come as easy or quickly as it does in the 135i, but the manual is so rewarding that I actually prefer having to downshift to get into the most out of the normally aspirated 3.0-liter engine. Plus, it still has all the other qualities-excellent ride and handling balance, perfectly weighted steering, attractively trimmed interior-that the turbo 1-series has, at a savings of almost $7000 and 2 mpg improvement in city driving.

I just love the 1-series. Not much to add since the last time we had one come through...when these keys show up on my desk, I get a spring in my step heading to the garage. I just think this is such a fun little car.

I'm of two minds when it comes to the 128i. On the one hand, we're talking about distilled BMW goodness for about $30,000. Rear-wheel drive, inline six, and low weight (for these days, anyway). Then there's the prestige that comes from wearing that propeller badge. What's not to like? On the other hand, $30,000 can buy far more powerful (Ford Mustang GT), better handling (Nissan 370Z), and better looking (both, in my opinion) sports coupes. The 128i is admittedly more refined than either of those brawlers, and it's hardly slow. Nonetheless, I find it easier to love the more expensive 135i, which makes even less sense on paper but overwhelms the senses with its tire squealing intensity.
