2011 Dodge Charger.
Introduced on Wednesday: 2011 Dodge Charger
What is it? A bit overdue, this pleasing makeover is just what Dodge’s five-year-old midsize stalwart needed.
What makes it tick? The base engine is a much-improved 3.6-liter V-6 that produces 292 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. These are modest improvements over the outgoing 2.7-liter and 3.5-liter models; besides that, the new V-6 is a bit more economical. Optional: A 370-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V-8.
How much, how soon? No word yet. But forget the sub-$25,000 starting price of the 2010 base model. The new one will feature a more expensive powertrain and more upscale interior appointments. Ka-ching. Add $2,000 to $3,000, please. A loaded R/T Hemi with all-wheel drive could top $35,000. Dealers have already made space for the new Charger’s imminent arrival in showrooms.
How’s it look? A low-calorie knock-off of the iconic 1968-’70 Charger and a 1999 Charger concept that had a tapered “Coke bottle” silhouette. Oddly, that is what fans clamored for in 2006, when the Charger nameplate was revived after a three-decade absence. Dodge resisted Coke fans then, but now has apparently seen the light.
